The cover blurb for Face of Truth promises a story that pushes against boundaries and the author's comfort zone, but that's doing M.C. Questgend a disservice. They've always danced a line between genres, mixing horror, thriller, and science fiction with erotic romance, and the storytelling here is less a push and more a polish of their talents.

What stood out most strongly for me was the narrative style, which is an interesting - and bold - choice. It put me in mind of a true-crime drama, with a soft, gravelly-voiced narrator saying "She'd discover later that day" or "She would find out later." It fit the story., gave it a bit of distance, and made it feel more authentic.

Regular readers will suspect the truth about Charles and Rebecca early on, but the 'why' of their story is half of the appeal here. There's so much there to uncover, so many little moments of conflict that hint at something deeper, it makes for a fascinating read. The other half of the appeal comes from Sarah, the young woman hired to invade their privacy, tear their lives apart, and play a role that we'd normally associate with the villain. It's an interesting twist, coming at the story from an angle we're not used to, and once the working relationship becomes a romantic one . . . that's where the story finds its heart.

I loved how many times the story twisted, the pressures and challenges Sarah places on her bosses, and the kinky sex they explore - awkwardly, roughly, and sometimes wonderfully - puts an erotic polish on the drama. Even knowing Questgend as I do, I was genuinely worried that Sarah would either be successful in her attempts to change them (which would have saddened me) or that she would suddenly become OK with all their lifestyle kinks (which would have felt forced), so . . . without getting into spoilers, the ending made sense.

My sincere thanks to the author for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
