Guest Post: Ghosts and Guardians by Gail Z. Martin

Ghosts and Guardians by Gail Z. Martin

My Deadly Curiosities urban fantasy series is set in historic Charleston, South Carolina. Given Charleston’s bloody past, the real city is considered to be one of the most haunted in North America. Since my characters are part of a secret alliance of mortals and immortals who keep the world safe from supernatural threats, you can bet there are plenty of ghosts!

In Legacy, the newest Deadly Curiosities book, Cassidy Kincaide is surprised to discover that her antique store, Trifles and Folly, just inherited the journal of a reclusive sea captain who died nearly two hundred years before. As Charleston experiences a series of unnerving omens—massive flocks of crows, earthquake tremors, ghostly warnings and more—Cassidy finds out that the blood magic worked by two ghostly guardians centuries ago is waning. If it fails, the city and the coastline could be wiped out by the dark power the guardians have kept at bay all these years. She and her friends must figure out how to strengthen the guardians’ protective magic without becoming a casualty!

There are ghosts galore in this series—and especially in Legacy. Cassidy’s ancestor, Dante, was a Revolutionary-era privateer. His ghost remains active and his water magic has played an important role in several books, including this one. The spirits of the two guardians—a sea captain and a pirate—are at the heart of the mystery Cassidy needs to solve to figure out how to shore up their protective spell. Family ghosts remain as sentries to protect their descendants.

In edition to the supernatural spirits, the ‘ghosts’ of history and memory play an important role as some characters try to escape their family heritage while other embrace it as destiny. The choices and beliefs of people long dead set the stage and narrow the options for the living who came long after them, an unseen influence. Plenty of spooky stuff for everyone!

Legacy is an action-packed urban fantasy paranormal thrill ride full of dark magic, infernal creatures, goblins and demigods, haunted places, pirate ghosts, found family, witch dynasties, loyal friends, Voudon spirits, secret history and plenty of adventure.
