Stacking The Shelves

Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books we are adding to our shelves, whether they be physical or digital. This includes physical books bought, digital books downloaded, and those titles received for review.

Review Titles

A handful of review books this week, with thanks to Orbit, Bold Strokes Books, Blackthorn Book Tours, and Supposed Crimes.

The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri is a book I've been curious about, which has been described as
filled with furious female agency...

Author of Empire of Sand and Realm of Ash Tasha Suri's The Jasmine Throne, beginning a new trilogy set in a world inspired by the history and epics of India, in which a captive princess and a maidservant in possession of forbidden magic become unlikely allies on a dark journey to save their empire from the princess's traitor brother.

Imprisoned by her dictator brother, Malini spends her days in isolation in the Hirana: an ancient temple that was once the source of the powerful, magical deathless waters — but is now little more than a decaying ruin.

Priya is a maidservant, one among several who make the treacherous journey to the top of the Hirana every night to clean Malini’s chambers. She is happy to be an anonymous drudge, so long as it keeps anyone from guessing the dangerous secret she hides.

But when Malini accidentally bears witness to Priya’s true nature, their destinies become irrevocably tangled. One is a vengeful princess seeking to depose her brother from his throne. The other is a priestess seeking to find her family. Together, they will change the fate of an empire.

The Noble and the Nightingale is a new fantasy full of diplomacy and romance by Barbara Ann Wright

Adella del Amanecer is from a noble family whose pride comes from dedication to the kingdom of Sarras. She works long hours as a diplomat and barely has time for her sisters, let alone romance, a fact that makes her nights feel longer than her days, especially when she thinks about the lovely bard on the corner.

As an ex-spy for the Firellian Empire, Bridget Leir has fled from crises and corruption until settling in Sarras, where she can hide as a bard. When a chance meeting with a beautiful diplomat leads to romance, Bridget’s new life feels filled with promise, until Sarras investigates Firellian rumblings of war. If the truth comes out, the Sarrasians—and Adella—will never believe Bridget’s spying days are done, and worse—Adella will be accused of sleeping with the enemy. It’ll be the gallows for them both.

7 Days in Hell by Iseult Murphy is a book tour title I'll be reviewing in early April

Nestled between counties Limerick and Cork in Southern Ireland, something evil lurks in the place of High Death.

When Vicky’s boss offers her a free vacation in a self-catering cottage over Halloween break, she jumps at the chance to spend quality time with her twin sister, Irene, and Irene’s miniature schnauzer, Ronnie.

The village of Basard may boast Ireland’s longest running Halloween celebration, and one of the country’s best preserved standing stone circles, but Vicky finds the place rather dead. What’s more, she can’t sleep for the nightly roars of a distant crowd.

Will the twins survive this Halloween vacation to wake the dead, when their 7 days in paradise turns into 7 Days in Hell?

Every Time We Meet by A. M. Leibowitz is a Bi/Lesbian/Non-Binary time loop romance that I downloaded on Groundhog Day!

Heidi’s life may be a complicated balancing act between work, her kids, and a messy relationship with her ex. But all that is about to change when she proposes to her long-time girlfriend at the top of the hill during the annual Lilac Festival. What could be more romantic?

When nothing about her day goes according to plan, and her proposal is rejected, Heidi is devastated. She confesses her one wish to a stranger on a park bench: to have the whole day over again. Little does she know, this will set her on an endless loop of reliving it, each time hoping for a different outcome.

As Heidi replays the events, she confronts her own poor choices and actions. Now she must figure out how to make things right if she hopes to break the cycle and find true love before time runs out.

New Acquisitions: Paperback Treasures

Back-to-back shipments from Chapters and Amazon this week, filling some gaps in the shelves and satisfying some new-release excitement.

Drone is the first Miranda Chase novel by M.L. Buchman, a series that Marlene over at Reading Reality turned me onto, calling it a female-fronted spy thriller akin to Tom Clancy’s Patriot Games, if Jack Ryan were more than a bit like Temperance Brennan in Bones.

Inked with a Kiss by Jennie Davids is an age-gap romance featuring a tattoo artist named Jamie and a bubbly younger woman named Sierra who makes her feel like the carefree teenager she never got to be.

Burn the Dark by S.A. Hunt is one I already wanted to read by finally grabbed in honor of Women in Horror Month. Supernatural meets Stranger Things in a horror action-adventure series about a punk YouTuber on a mission to bring down witches, one vid at a time.

J.M. Frey is a fellow Canadian I've enjoyed before, but the instant I saw the cover for The Woman Who Fell Through Time (in which a young woman stuck in Regency-era England finds herself maid and companion a world famous authoress whose yet-to-be-completed novel is destined to feature the first lesbian kiss in the history of British Literature), I knew I had to physically have it on my self.

The Ultimatum by Karen Robards is the first in an female-fronted international thriller series featuring Bianca St. Ives, a kick-ass, high-tech, femme fatale Robin Hood.
