My Perfect Partner - David and Tina is, in many ways, something of a departure for M.C. Questgend. It feels like a more mature, more self-aware story, one solidly grounded in the romance and the characters rather than detailed gender bending and sexy erotica. Those elements are still there, but they are part of the story, rather than the focus.

While the book does seem to open with plenty of sexiness, what MC is exploring here is the reality of sexual addiction, the breakdown of communication, and what that all means for a relationship. This is some dark, emotional, heavy material, and it will leave you angry and frustrated with both characters. The balance between romance, drama, and erotica was really well done. After the quick-but-detailed sex addiction in the opening chapters, we are introduced to a lengthy celebration of the platonic friendship between David and Tina, which slowly gives way to courtship and ultimately dating, but not without bumps and challenges along the way.

Now, if you are at all familiar with MC, then you can probably guess the "secret [April] is terrified to reveal," but I am still hesitant about saying too much. Yes, there most definitely is a transgender element to the story, but it is nothing kinky or fetishistic, and instead something heartfelt and sincere. I honestly expected things to go in a different direction with gender, and was pleasantly surprised by how the approach made this a story with which readers can easily relate.

Similarly, I expected the relationship angle to take a different path as well, and the twists we encounter there kind of set me aback. I had to think about the story and stop thinking about the characters, allowing myself to empathize with them instead. There is some surprising character development here to go with the character revelations, and it feels like it waits until we are all happy before indulging in the sexiness MC does so well.
