A Figure of Self-Empowerment by Stephen Zimmer (When Shadows Fall Blog Tour)

Joining us today is Stephen Zimmer, an award-winning author and filmmaker based out of Lexington Kentucky who has not only written 3 books Rayden Valkyrie novels, but has filmed a TV pilot for her entitled Saga of a Lionheart.

A Figure of Self-Empowerment

Rayden Valkyrie is a figure of self-empowerment and self-affirmation.  In many blurbs and interviews involving Rayden, I have pointed out that she does not serve any emperor, king, or chieftain, but instead walks her own path, adhering to an unwritten honor code that she has developed and embraced across the years.

The roots of this are found in her childhood.  I have not yet told the full story of what she experienced, but I have revealed that she was orphaned at a young age, when her parents were both slain in brutal acts of violence.  After finding her way south, Rayden was taken in by the Gessa tribe and raised as one of their own, but the tragic experience kindled a fierce aversion within her toward becoming a victim or having her life dictated by others.

Though she cares deeply for the Gessa and does not hesitate to put her life on the line for them, Rayden set out by herself into the world, to find her own way and to confront the wicked and predatory wherever she encounters them.

At a very young age, Rayden made a conscious choice.

She refused to be a victim.

Ever since, this momentous choice resonates in her responses to all kinds of situations, from drunken men trying to grope her in a tavern, to the threat of an emperor’s legions that would enslave her if she were taken captive in war.  She does not hesitate for a moment to take a stand, acting decisively in self-defense in the case of the men in the tavern and stepping forward to become a leader of warriors in the case of fighting against a tyrannical empire.

While requiring her to become a fighter and a leader, this choice to not be a victim also instilled in Rayden a compassion for others and the willingness to defend those who are too weak or powerless to resist an oppressor.  She does not tolerate the abuse of authority, and as much as she holds herself accountable for her own actions, she also demands accountability when it comes to others and the actions they take.

This encompassing view of individual accountability has its foundation in Rayden’s ability to see each person in light of their own merits and behavior. This is a big reason why Rayden is able to make her way through so many diverse lands and cultures without having the kinds of conflicts that those who judge people and groups broadly would have.  This further enables her to not be swayed by the trappings of wealth and prestige, allowing her to see true natures and intents in the individuals that she encounters.

To carry out this kind of life and maintain this perspective, Rayden has to push herself always to grow stronger in mind, body, and spirit  She holds herself to a high standard, as she knows she must if she is to lead others, be a mentor to them, or nurture them.

Everything hinges upon making right choices and Rayden has a keen understanding of that, each and every day that she goes forward in her world.

She needs no sanction or permission from others to walk her path.

She recognizes her own strength and embraces it, without apology.

Ultimately, Rayden has discovered that genuine strength is not conferred from without, but rather drawn from within.  As such, Rayden is a figure of self-empowerment and self-affirmation that I think can be very inspirational,  and relevant, to audiences of today.

Sensual delights, grandiose spectacles, and the spilling of blood enthrall wealthy and poor alike.  Beneath the surface, Rayden senses an undercurrent of a darker nature.

Learning everything she can of the venomous secrets lurking within the shadows, little time remains before a host of northern tribes arrives outside its walls.

Power lies within blood, and dark rituals have unlocked mysteries from the depths of the abyss.
