Not long after I started building my new Goodreads profile, shelving the books that matter to me according to why they are so important, Tom Longo sent me a quick introduction and offered one of his titles for review. I looked through his catalog on Amazon and Smashwords and saw quite a few that caught my eye, but he took the time to consider what interests me and recommended My Wife Learns the Art of Femdom.

I'm glad he did, although (to be totally honest) it took me a while before I fully appreciated it. Let me start with why I doubted it, and then move onto what I think Longo captured so very well.

There is a significant amount of humiliation to this, with a pivotal part of the training being to completely dehumanize and depersonalize Tom, reducing him to a 'thing' or a 'unit' with no name, gender, or status. Mistress Rose insists upon it, advising Angela to "treat it with the minimal respect required to maintain a happy relationship with the unit," but then she talks about the importance of safewords before revealing her philosophy - which, for me, cast the entire story in a new light:

“The reason we strip the unit of its humanity is so that we can rebuild it. There will be a time when it can be your husband, but for now it needs to be broken down so that it can be trained properly.” She explained, “you will be able to treat it as your loving partner, but only after it changes. Once the unit pleases you with the right frame of mind, it can be rewarded and treated as a husband again.”

This is a story where humiliation is not a goal, but a means to an end, and that matters to me.

Back to my earlier comment, Longo captures the essence of a loving, female-led relationship very well. Tom and Angela are a fantastic couple, willing to try new things and explore their boundaries, all in the interest of strengthening their relationship. Female domination starts out as Tom's fantasy, but Angela comes to enjoy it just as much, if not more. Deciding to pay for private training sessions with Mistress Rose is a decision they share and support as a couple.

The erotic scenes are well written, tasteful smutty rather than cheaply trashy, with a wealth of sensory detail. Thoughts and emotions carry as much weight as physical sensations, and that helps to keep the story anchored in the female-led experience. Similarly, the dialogue is realistic, with little things like Angela's too-loud/aggressive command to strip reminding us that as passionate and kinky as they are, they are new to this, learning as they go. In terms of larger themes, I thought the way the story captured the whole chastity experience - from orgasm denial to the feel of restraint, to the re-focusing of attention, to the control aspects of the leash - was especially well-thought-out and explored as an integral part of the relationship, rather than just a random bit of fetish.

As it turned out, My Wife Learns the Art of Femdom was indeed the perfect introduction to Tom Longo's erotica. I look forward to more.
